week 1/19-1/23
I was watching Waist Deep yesterday and something in the movie really struck me. The irony of the main character's situation and the role the second character, a female, played in the movie. The main character is a young African-American man who got himself out of poverty and was doing honest work (security guard); however, when a few gangsters from the old neighborhood kidnap his son, he reverts to things he left in the past in order to get his son back. I find this ironic because he left all the negativity of the old neighborhood only to be brought back into it. As far as the female main character, she played the role of a prostitute. Society views females as objects, especially in the media. This movie is no different. She is shown in provocative attire most of the film and displayed in such a way that clearly shows the views of the media at large.
